Why Supplements May Not Be the Best Menopause Solution in 2024

Are you spending money on supplements but still not feeling your best?

If you're navigating perimenopause, menopause, or postmenopause, it's easy to believe supplements are the solution.

They seem like an easy fix for everything from hot flashes to sleepless nights to bone health.

But did you know the average American spends about $56 a month—or $670 a year—on vitamins and supplements? Crazy, right?

And here’s the thing: they might not be the key to revitalizing your health during this time.

I’m here to share 5 important reasons why supplements may not only be unnecessary but could also pose real risks.

Together, let’s explore how you can make better decisions for your well-being and reclaim your vitality—naturally!

Hi, I’m Miyako Hazama, a Japan-based menopause Ki-energy expert.

I help high-performing women over 40 reclaim their vitality and thrive in their prime years through natural, holistic methods rooted in ancient Asian wisdom.

Over the past 30 years, I’ve guided women just like you through these midlife transitions, and today I want to share why I don’t recommend supplements for perimenopause and menopause—because there’s a better way to approach your health.

There’s No Magic Pill: The Facts About Menopause Supplements

Many women ask me, What supplements should I take for perimenopause?

It’s a very common question! After all, with so many products being marketed as solutions for midlife health, it’s hard not to feel tempted to try them all.

But let’s take a deeper look at why you might not need them at all.

1. Expert Doubts on Supplement Effectiveness

Did you know that the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) doesn’t recommend any dietary supplements for managing menopause symptoms?

Many doctors and experts agree: supplements often lack the research needed to prove they work or are safe.

Dr. Lauren Streicher from Northwestern Medical Center says, “Most supplements just haven’t been studied.”

Instead, evidence consistently shows that lifestyle changes like a balanced diet and exercise are far more effective and safer.

  1. Hidden Dangers from Interactions with Medications

If you’re already taking medications for conditions like high blood pressure, thyroid issues, or migraines, adding supplements could create dangerous side effects.

Dr. Anna Barier from Mount Sinai School of Medicine has seen many harmful interactions between supplements and prescription medications.

Before adding supplements to your routine, please consult your doctor first—it could make all the difference to your health and safety.

3. “Natural” Does Not Always Mean Safe

It’s easy to believe that “natural” means “safe,” but not all herbal or plant-based supplements are free of risks.

Some products, especially Chinese herbal supplements, have been found to contain harmful substances like heavy metals or pesticides, which can cause serious health issues.

Your health is too important to take a chance on vague labels. Make sure you know exactly what’s in any supplement before considering it.

4. The Risk of Overdosing Is Very Real

While vitamins are essential, taking too much of certain vitamins can actually harm your body.

Supplements containing fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, and E can build up in your system and lead to toxicity, causing everything from nausea to long-term damage.

Research shows the best way to get your vitamins and minerals is through food. It’s a far safer and more effective approach than relying on pills.

5. Fix Your Roots Before Looking for Fruit

A healthy tree grows strong from its roots. In the same way, you need to balance your body’s Ki-Energy before turning to supplements.

For over 30 years, I’ve practiced and taught this ancient wisdom: when your energy flows well, your body can thrive.

By aligning your energy, you’ll find relief from symptoms like fatigue, mood swings, and hormonal imbalances.

And once your body is balanced, you might realize you need far fewer supplements than you originally thought. As T. Harv Eker said, “If you want to change the fruits, you must first change the roots.”

So, What Should You Do?

Instead of immediately reaching for supplements, focus on balancing your body’s internal energy flow.

A holistic approach can leave you feeling more energized, stable, and in control. Many women I work with discover that once they balance their Ki-Energy, they feel more aligned, peaceful, and clear in their health decisions—often leading to fewer supplements overall.

Conclusion: Balance Before Supplements

I’m not saying all supplements are bad, but they’re not always necessary.

Begin by balancing your body—nourish yourself from the inside out.

Once you feel that energy flowing, you may find your need for supplements naturally decreases.

Menopause isn’t just something to “get through”—it’s a time to reclaim your vitality and truly thrive. Let’s start with what’s real: nourishing yourself from the roots.
